Our History

1987
Mark Halpern starts a part-time venture called Kitchen Stuff in a 10x10 ft. booth at the Pickering Flea Market. The business focuses on a few inexpensive ceramics, woodenware gifts and a small assortment of kitchen gadgets.


1989
Kitchen Stuff flea market operation grows to encompass 13 booths.


1993
First store opens at Yonge and Bloor - an 800 sq. ft. space intended as a temporary extension to the flea market operation during the Christmas season. Three months later, due to the store's exceptional performance, Halpern signs a one-year lease.


1995
The Yonge and Bloor store moves across the street to a 3,200 sq. ft. space and new product offerings are added such as bath, rugs, drapery, candles and home décor, as well as higher-end brand names. The store is renamed Kitchen Stuff Plus and enjoys instant success.


1996
The Yonge and Bloor store's excellent reputation quickly leads to the opening of a second store at Yonge and Eglinton, a 4,100 sq. ft. space.


1997

1998
A strong, loyal customer base is established with over 50,000 customers on the store's mailing list.

Store #3 opens in Scarborough - an 11,000 sq. ft. box store at Kennedy and Hwy. 401. Product selection expands to include a bigger tabletop and cookware assortment, framed art, a larger bath department and small electrical appliances.

2000
Store #4 opens in Mississauga - a 12,000 sq. ft. box store at Dundas and Hwy. 403.
A 22,000 sq. ft. building opens on Orfus Rd. representing the company's new head office, distribution centre and warehouse outlet - its fifth store. Surplus inventory, discontinued items and closeout specials are offered, as well as regular merchandise available at all stores.

2006
A new 12,700 sq. ft. store opens in Etobicoke at the Cloverdale Mall.


2008
Two new super stores are launched back to back in April, one in Mississauga at the Heartland Town Centre (Mavis & Hwy. 401) and another in Oakville at the Burloak Power Centre (Burloak and QEW).


2009
A new 13,000 sq. ft store opens in North Whitby at the Taunton Garden Power Centre.


2010
Kitchen Stuff Plus becomes a member of the Retail Council of Canada (RCC), a not-for-profit, industry-funded association representing more than 40,000 store fronts of all retail formats across Canada.


2012
In April, a 5,200 sq. ft. store opens in the heart of Toronto's trendy, up-and-coming Liberty Village. This marks store #11 for the rapidly growing company.


2013
In June, a 10,000 sq. ft. store opens in Woodbridge, at the intersectiion of Hwy 7 and Weston Road. This marks our 12th location.
